Default 'Maybe You Know a Roleplayer Like This'

Sadly, this sort of character is all too familiar to me-as I'm sure it will be to you guys too!

In my relatively extensive experience in roleplaying games I've had the opportunity to adventure alongside a lot of different types of people. Over time, I've noticed patterns in different sorts of player archetypes, and one type in particular struck me as being almost pathogenic. This lead me to propose the existence of a previously unclassified personality disorder, which I refer to as either Olaf-Syndrome or Dugarious Disease in honor of the two characters who I have encountered suffering from it. To the layperson, however, those suffering from this affliction are normally referred to simply as dicks, bastards, or ass-pumpkins.

Following is a clinical description of the symptoms that define the five progressive stages of the disorder. This is a set of working definitions only and may be modified as researchers gain more data:

Stage 1:
-Character is a glory hound.
-Tends to be argumentative. Enjoys proving others wrong or swaying them to his point of view.
-Frustrates easily when things don't go the way he wants them to. This may cause him to be irritable and snap at others.
-Always insists on getting his fair share of the treasure. If there is an item that both he and another party member can use, he will insist on having it himself unless overruled by the rest of the party. If this happens he has a tendency to sulk.
-Resents anyone who shows him up in any situation.
-Subject will take foolish risks, trusting in his exceptional abilities to carry him through safely.

Stage 2:
-Becomes bored and distracted easily when the other members of the party are engaged in any activity that does not immediately involve him.
-Has an opinion on everything, even on matters he knows nothing about. Will always try to lead any discussion and sway others to his way of thinking. If proven obviously wrong, he may switch sides and act like he had supported that point of view all along.
-If the character experiences extreme anger or frustration he may take violent actions. This is usually followed by feelings of guilt that will cause the character to overcompensate for the outburst by being exceptionally generous and kind for a short while. This may appear as a remission of the syndrome, but symptoms will reappear as the character starts to feel that others are taking advantage of him for being so nice.
-Desires all items that the party finds which he can specifically use. Believes that he can use them most effectively and that they are rightfully his. The character is overly wary of anyone who he thinks may try to steal his possessions.
-Mild Paranoia: believes anyone who disagrees with him is just doing it because they are jealous or hateful.
-Is very impressed by his own powers, and will constantly try to prove to those around him how powerful he is by showing them up or belittling their weaknesses and mistakes. He downplays his own weaknesses as unimportant things in front of others, but secretly searches for ways to compensate for them.

Stage 3:
-If the character feels that those around him are not paying sufficient attention to him, he will immediately act in such a way as to force his way back into the limelight. These actions will become more extreme if the character is hungry, tired, or otherwise dissatisfied.
-Believes he is the most clever person in the group. Anyone who figures out something he couldn't just got lucky.
-Any feelings of anger or frustration will usually lead to violent action. Explanations of why these attacks were justified will be formulated after the fact.
-Feels that he deserves all the wealth and magic items the party finds, but is still willing to bargain away the items he doesn't really want to gain what he does. He will argue until the end of time to get those items he truly desires. Once he has an item he will guard it jealously and never under any circumstances will he give it up.
-Believes he is the toughest all around member in the group. Has secret plans to "even the score" against other party members he knows he couldn't beat in a stand up fight.
-Believes he is the best at any given task. Harbors a deep-seated hatred against anyone who suggests or displays that this belief may not be correct.

Stage 4:
-If the character is in a situation where he is not the center of attention, he will take reckless and often violent actions to force attention onto himself.
-Thinks he is always right. Will never change his opinion even when his beliefs are proven obviously wrong.
-Has no friends. Considers everyone either an enemy or a subordinate.
-Anyone who disagrees with him or stands in the way of his just actions is an agent of evil in need of killing.
-Covets all wealth and possessions he sees, even those items that are useless to him. He will attack anyone who he thinks might try to steal one of his items or handle it without his permission.
-Believes he is invincible.
-Feels that others should acknowledge him as their rightful ruler. Any men who do not willingly follow him are minions of evil and any women who do not desire him are obviously lesbians.

Stage 5:
-If the character feels those around him are taking his divine presence for granted, he will immediately kill them for their insolence.
-Considers all living beings tools to be used when convenient and destroyed when they become troublesome.
-Belief that all matter in the universe is rightfully his possession.
-Defines 'good' as anything he does and 'evil' as anything that stands in his way.
-Believes he is omnipotent and omniscient.
-Demands that he be worshipped as a god.

Everyone is a bit like that, nothing is black and white. I too make remarks when people die in 2-3 hits. Usually as a result of having much superior runes, low armor level due greed, or sacrificing armor level for other attributes (using -x to armor, and +x to energy for example). They tend to be monstermagnets and accumulate DP as a result.

I too "rush" as a warrior (i play all classes, so i know in essence what the other class is experiencing), especially since it is very hard to "tank" these days. its better to go for soft targets that provide the most defense/holding power/offense to the enemy. Its not always best to go for the monk directly as the specific monster might be a poor healer. Many a player will object to that, cause they don't catch the "build" of the enemy, and think dogmatic. As long as you are able to retreat when you are halfway down your health and have some means to heal a reasonable amount and get rid of conditions there is nothing wrong with "overextending", monks should just not try to heal you, and that extending player should fall back before the situation turns critical. A party of 5 rangers is for sure not going to advance in order to attack you. You need to approach, or choose to be sitting duck. forward, strafe, forward strafe is a good way to kite and dodge. But too many players are just too stationairy when they are getting targetted, and remain like that. once they start running they turn their backs, so they receive (more) criticals.

If people die often that is not systematically viewed by me as that person being a bad player, no I believe it can be a fluke. But when the first time they die do as a result of probable poor equipment choice (ie taking too much damage for that particular attack/source), then i make suggestions. warriors luring without bow is just not ok, a bow is excellent, yet not many warriors cary one, and still try to lure by entering agro range, with added risks, in case of blended groups. I will say "keep a cheap bow in your weapon slot".

You should differ remarks like "noob, nub, ........., from constructive suggestions. IN that case the story you would write would hold. In essence PUGS usually dont have the chemistry or communication to act brilliantly iin an awkward situation, and sometimes the chemistry is there leading to superb results in the arenas or missions

I've seen monks with many of these symptoms... hell, the onle one's I'm yet to see an example of this this are the newbie assassins and ritualists in general.

The entire time I was reading that I was imaging one in FoW, throwing on mending then attacking all the Abyssals.


NB: I do not think all warriors are like that though. Most, not all.

I fall in to the category for having a superiority complex, it's rather annoying when you don't want to lead but find the current party leader is too incompetent to do so and you find yourself taking over rather condescendingly to ensure success.

Hmm, with the exception of like 5 people, the entire GW community falls into this scenario.
Same with all the people on AOL, every Online game ever created and ever will be created, anyone under the age of 30, and I'm sure there are more.
